State of the Library #8
New stories for the Forbidden Section, hiatus on the horizon, and more...
Spring doesn’t last long in South Carolina. We get a week’s worth of really nice weather in the 70s F range. These are days interspersed between brief plunges into the chill of winter. And then, a switch somewhere flips, and it starts getting hot. Even though many people think of “May” as springtime, in the South the month of May is just summer’s warm-up act. People start talking about making trips to the beach and how “evenings would be nicer if it weren’t for all the dang mosquitos”.
Personally, I like going to the mountains in the summer but I’m sure my husband will drag me out to Pawley’s Island at some point. (I’m not a fan of deep, dark water and the ocean is full of that.)
New Entry for the Forbidden Section
As of May 1, I moved a story into the Forbidden Section, which is an archive available only for paid subscribers.
The story that has been moved to the Section is:
The Big Gold Box
If you would like to read stories about the Holy Grail, wendigo-like creatures, and biblically accurate angels, then I suggest upgrading to a paid subscription.
Hiatus for June
Everyone needs a break from time to time. For the month of June, I will not be posting a new story or a State of the Library. You’ll still see me on Notes, of course, but I won’t be posting any writing.
Being relieved of any pressing deadlines will give me a bit of breathing room as I work on a new perk for paid subscribers. Hopefully, I’ll come back in July rejuvenated and with new, fun stuff!
Under the Roses
The final installment for Under the Roses dropped on April 25. I thought it would go into May but I incorrectly counted the installments, which I was keeping all in the same document.
I’m really happy with the response I received to my first planned serial. It was very encouraging and, as mentioned before, I plan on having a serial in the fall centered around Sardis, the Forgotten Librarian.
Under the Roses will remain free through the summer before being added to the Forbidden Section in August.

Story for May: “The Kindness of Family”
In May’s story, we’re back in Hammondville (it’s been a little difficult to leave this place): Colleen is on the run from a cult when she receives aid from surprising sources, reminding her what really makes a family.
Excerpt:
Colleen looked back at the parking lot and the blood drained from her face. Three men were getting out of a dark sedan. She recognized them under the bright parking lot lights. It was her former brothers: Tony, Greg, and the new guy, Ryan.
“Is there a back way out?” Colleen asked, getting to her feet.
“What?” asked Bobby.
“I’m leaving a bad situation. Those men followed me.”
Bobby set his mug down. “Krys, lock that door.”
Just here to say that I like the new "library" image, and I hope you enjoy your time off.
Georgia spring is equally short. erf
